Booking the Hotel
The Conrad Tokyo is an upscale city hotel with 290 rooms from the 28th to 37th floors of a luxury skyscraper in Tokyo’s business friendly district of Shiodome. It is known as one of Hilton’s best city hotels worldwide.
I booked 5 nights at the hotel, 4 with Hilton Free Night Certificates earned from Hilton Surpass bonus (2 FNC’s), 1 from 15K spend on Surpass and 1 from holding the Hilton Aspire card. For the 5th night, I booked a standard night at 95K points.
Location
The Conrad is situated in the heart of the Shimbashi business district, encompassing floors 28–37 of the Shiodome skyscraper. On one side of the property, you’ll find sweeping views of the city, and on the other side, expansive views of Tokyo Bay. The beautiful Hama-riky Gardens are situated right at the base of the building.
You may find this business district a bit quiet at first glance; however, it’s only a 10 minute walk from the hotel to Ginza which is well known for upscale luxury shopping, restaurants and cafe’s.
The Tsukiji Fish market, one of the world’s largest wholesale fish market and home to numerous well-known sushi establishments, is another popular tourist destination within walking distance from Conrad.
Overall, the hotel’s location is central and convenient, especially if you’re interested in the dining and retail attractions around Ginza. Moreover, the hotel’s proximity to the two train stations on numerous Tokyo rail services essentially puts any destination within reach.
Check-In
The hotel lobby is located on the 28th floor of the Shiodome skyscraper. Upon arrival at ground level, there was a bellman to help us with our bags and bring them up to the lobby/room. When one arrives at the first-floor lobby, a set of elevators takes you up the hotel lobby and then there are another set of elevators that takes you to the guest rooms.
Immediately upon entering the lobby, the space is expansive and minimalistic, in traditional Japanese design.
At the check-in desk, the hotel confirmed by 5 night stay. They confirmed due to my Diamond status that I had been upgraded to the Executive Lounge floor (37th) with Tokyo Bay view. They quickly let me know about my Diamond benefits including complementary breakfast at the restaurant or Executive lounge.
Conrad Tokyo Room
The Executive Level guest room is 516 sq feet. The Bay View side of the room overlooks the Royal Hamarikyu Gardens and Tokyo Bay for stunning views.
The rooms offer Japanese inspired décor that combine both modern décor and Japanese minimalism into an elegant interior design.
Unfortunately, despite the upgrade, the property was full and we were in a double twin room rather than King room.
The hotel provides complementary PJs for guests to wear to sleep, although like bathrooms aren’t meant to be taken. A small Conrad rubber duck and bear were placed on the bed as a welcome gift.
Up against the window is an end to end chaise lounge which allows you to enjoy the view and just relax. The living area also has a wooden round table and white leather chair.
The bathroom has a pristine white standalone bath tub with separate enclosures for the shower and toilet. The bathroom also had a vanity glass with his and hers sink.
The toilet was of traditional Japanese bidet variety with a variety of water functions. The enclosed shower area had both rain shower and hand held varieties. Toiletries were of the reusable bottle variety by Byredo which was above average quality.
Overall, I loved the room and especially the view. The upkeep of the hotel is quite impressive, despite having opened back in 2005. For Japan, the room is quite spacious overall.
Dining
Tokyo is a city that takes its cuisine seriously, and the Conrad is no exception to the rule. Tokyo actually has more Michelin stars than any other city in the world including Paris and London. Guests with Hilton Diamond status can choose complimentary breakfast in the Cerise restaurant at the hotel’s lobby level or in the Executive lounge.
At Cerise, Conrad’s casual all day restaurant, the breakfast buffet spread at first glance is quite impressive. They had plenty of hot and cold options with a good mix of Western and Japanese options.
However, the best part of the breakfast is also a choosing a complementary main dish. There were printed menus with options such as omelets, benedicts, waffles and the like.
My favorite option on the menu that I had a couple times was the Smorrebrod Lobster.
Given how busy Cerise is at breakfast time, we were actually seated at Kazahana for a couple days. I didn’t mind walking back for the buffet items as Kazahana overlooks the bay and the Imperial gardens.
One day, we also opted for breakfast at the Executive lounge, which is located on the 37th floor. The lounge spans two rooms on both sides of the building: one with city view and the other facing Tokyo Bay. There’s a variety of seating within the lounge, from two to four person tables, lounging areas with couches and some seats overlooking the window.
The breakfast has quite a bit of a more limited spread than at Cerise, but a more exclusive environment give that the lounge is only available to Diamond members and guests who have booked an Executive room type. The Executive lounge provides a separate a-la-carte menu from Cerise as well.
The best item on the menu was the scrambled eggs with uni.
Other dining options at the hotel include China Blue, which has previously earned Michelin stars for its interpretation of Chinese cuisine. Collage is the restaurant’s modern fine dining French restaurant. For Japanese food, there is Kazahana for sushi, kaiseki and teppan dishes. Finally there is TwentyEight bar right in front of the reception desk area and a popular spot for afternoon tea. Other than breakfast, we did not have any meals at the Conrad given the bevy of dining options around Tokyo.
Facilities and Service
The hotel is geared towards a mix of business and casual travelers. There are several meeting rooms for those that wish to hold business functions at the hotel. On the hotel lobby level, there is a small gift shot where you can purchase various items including the Conrad bear and ducks that are used as welcome gifts.
The Mizuki spa, located on the 29th floor, hosts the fitness center and pool. In addition, there are 10 private spa rooms, a sauna and steam room. The indoor pool was lengthy, which is great for doing laps and overlooks the skyscrapers around the hotel.
The gym area was quite large and well stocked with ample equipment types. The space has plenty of free wights, treadmills, exercise machines and an aerobics room for a good workout.
Final Thoughts
The Conrad Tokyo is one of the city’s more upscale hotels and can provide great value for your Hilton points or free night certificates. The hotel’s central location makes it a convenient choice to visit anywhere in Tokyo. Elite recognition was good with access to the executive lounge and complimentary breakfast. It is my preferred points hotel while staying in Tokyo and will certainly be back whenever I visit the city again.
